JAMESTOWN was the first permanent
English settlement within the limits of the
United States and was founded in 1607 by
a small company under the leadership of
Captain Newport.
The settlers landed on May 14th, sent out
exploring parties and began to build fortifica-
tions. The first attack from the Indians occurred
within a fortnight and resulted in a victory for
the Colonists.
In 1619 the first legislative assembly in America
was held at Jamestown, and here in the same
year slavery was first introduced into the
original thirteen colonies.
