THE FOXTERRIER. (Canis domesticus.)
Of all dogs to be met with either in the cities or the country, the most
popular and companionable is the Foxterrier. It is sharp and
intelligent, good-tempered and clean, a first-rate house dog, quite a
gentleman, and a great sportsman in its way, for there is no dog more
keen after a rat or a rabbit than this much-loved terrier. There is also
a toy variety of the Foxterrier, which makes a charming pet and is
generally to be seen at dog shows, but like most toy varieties they are
more delicate than the larger kinds of the same species. The specimen
on this card is the smooth-coated variety, but there is also the wire-
haired Foxterrier; the only difference in the breeds is that of the coat.
