GREENSBORO FEMALE COLLEGE. The corner stone of
Greensboro Female College was laid in 1843 and was the
first regularly chartered woman's college in North Carolina,
and the second south of the Potomac. The College was
burned in 1863 and reopened in 1873. In 1903 it was adver-
tised for sale, but its Alumnae purchased the institution and
presented it to the Methodist Church. In 1904 it was again
destroyed by fire, and again the Alumnae came to the fore
in assisting in its rebuilding.
