The Johns Hopkins University owes its foundation
to the liberality of the Baltimore merchant whose name
It was incorporated August 24th, 1867, and at
the death of the philanthropist, December 24th, 1873. half
his fortune was left for its endowment. The University
consists of nine distinct buildings. Since degrees were first
conferred, in 1878, nearly 1,500 students have graduated.
