Sir Joshua Reynolds, P. R. A.; the great portrait
and subject painter, was born at Plympton Earls, near Plymouth,
1723. He settled in London in 1752, and quickly became the
most popular portrait painter of the day. He died 1792. His
picture of 'The Age of Innocence'' is in the National Gallery,
London,
