TO THE EDITOR OF THE HERALD:-
"E. P." seems long of sympathy for
Spain and Germany but short of his-
torical knowledge, so permit me to quote
from the London Graphic of September
16, which arrived here yesterday:-
"It is nearly twelve hundred years since
their (the Moors') conquering progress
was first stayed by Charles Martel on the
banks of the Loire (France), but for
which, as Gibbon has said, Moslem doctors.
might to-day be teaching philosophy and
mathematics at Oxford and expounding
the Koran in the Sorbonne. The curious
thing is that it should have fallen to the
Flemish
enthrall the Moors in their last retreat."
And really it is not even "curious," but
the most natural sequence of events in the
world!
If "E. F." had contended that Tripoli
rightfully belongs to Italy I would agree
with him, because both places were once
in the Roman Empire, and Italy is not,
like Spain, "a dying nation"-the Italians
formed during centuries the,bulwark im-
peding the onslaught of the whole Mussul-
man world, and because the Spaniard alone
has the ability 'to colonize in the true sense
of the word-not only to conquer, but to
thrive in tropical countries.
This peculiar immunity is due to the
bacillus Saracensis-result of the inter-
marriage between Spaniards and Saracens
during the time Spain was partly subdued
by the latter.
France, England and the newest competi-
tor, Germany, certainly are able to con-
quer colonies, but as soon, as they try to
şettle down conditions are against them
and they slowly disappear.
Whatever the outcome of the Franco-
German controversy concerning Morocco,
both must remember that Spain is deserv-
ing the privilege of concessions because
the Spaniard alone among all European
nations will thrive in Morocco.
