What is now Missouri was part of the Louisiana Territory
discovered by the Spaniard DeSoto in 1541 and the Frenchmen
Marquette and Joliet in 1673. Spain in 1799 ceded her claim
to France, and in 1803 the U. S. bought the Territory.
Missouri was admitted into the Union in 1821 as the 24th
State. Jackson County was organized in December 1826, and
in July, the first county court convened at Independence.
In 1827 a log court house was built, and in 1836 and 1848 new
court houses were completed which, in turn, made way for
the present structure.
