Redbacked Shrike (Lanius collurio). This beautiful
bird arrives in May, and is the commonest of the Shrike
family in Britain. It is also called the butcher bird, from
its habit of sticking its prey on thorns until such time as it
should be wanted. The Shrike is distinctly quarrelsome,
and will attack and kill any bird under its own size. The
nest consists of twigs and plant stems lined with hair and
wool, and contains from four to six eggs of a cream colour
spotted with light brown.
