George Gordon, sixth Lord Byron, the poet, was
born in Holles Street, Cavendish Square, London, on
22nd of January, 1788. He was educated at Harrow,
and Trinity College, Cambridge. His chief poems
are "Childe Harold," "Don Juan," "The Siege of
Corinth" and the celebrated satire "English Bards
and Scotch Reviewers." Byron's poetical influence
in his own country for a time swept all before it, but
it gradually abated its force, and is now almost non-
existent. He died in Greece on 19th April, 1824, his
body being brought to England and buried near
Newstead.
