Oliver Wendell Holmes, the son of the Rev. Abiel
Holmes, was born at Cambridge, Massachusetts,
August 29th, 1809. He entered Havard College at
the age of sixteen and graduated in 1829. In 1836
he took the M.D. degree, and later engaged
in general practice in Boston. In 1847 he became
professor of Anatomy at Havard. In 1857-8 he
published "The Autocrat of the Breakfast Table"
and became famous In 1858-9 he produced "The
Professor at the Breakfast Table," which created an
equal sensation.
"Elsie Venner" was his first novel. His writings
are noted for their sparkling wit and humour beneath
which is a considerable depth of thought. He died
in 1894.
