The "First Guards" were raised by Charles II. Prin-
cipal battles: Blenheim, Ramillies, Oudenarde, Malpla-
quet, Dettingen, Lincelles, Corunna Barrosa, Waterloo,
Alma, Inkerman, Sevastopol, Tel-el-Kebir, Suakin 1885,
Khartoum, Modder River. They gained the title of
"Grenadier" Guards in commemoration of having de-
feated the Grenadiers of the French Imperial Guard at
Waterloo.
