Memory's Wreath
L'
ET wreathes of daises crown their deeds.
And float on gleaming waves;
Where sea-birds dip on graceful wing
And soar to heav'n in praise.
Go! Cast the sacred wreath each year,
Where sleep the honored brave;
Where lies the great Titanic wreck,
Those martyrs toiled to save.
The night was clear, the stars shone o'er,
Their bright hours growing dim,
A giant iceberg struck the ship!
Confusion, reigned within.
"Are we in danger?" broke a voice,
"We are!" the Captain cried.
But nobly on the bridge he stood,
The man of British pride.
Two children standing by this brave,
Confiding, in his care.
One, to a boat he safely led,
One, sinking with him, there.
Then ringing to the stars-a scream!
"My babes! My babes! she cried,
A Peasant Mother waits in bliss
Their coming Eventide.
Just as the mighty ship plunged down
Into the cruel sea;
Her noble band in accents broke,
"Nearer, My God to Thee,'
"Twas April fifteenth, nineteen twelve,
"Twix the hours one and two;
The lookout shouted from aloft-
"Bergs! Just ahead of you!"
Like some great monster, bleeding-torn-
Lieth the great, proud ship;
A sailing palace left the shore,
Lost-on her maiden trip.
Souls-fifteen hundred–rest in peace.
Reposing in that shrine,
Who breathed the breath of ocean's fame,
'Mid Tears and Prayers-Divine.
Oh! Could we plant that emblem pure
Around thy silver shores-
To cheer the weeping wave that spreads
Where love Eternal pours.
TITANIC
APRIL 15
1912
"Women and children shall be first,"
Man's tribute grandly paid;
"Twas Major Butt in golden prime,
No more our Chieftain's Aide.
And rich men of heroic blood,
Whose deeds exceed their gold,
True, like the wife, the Hercine,
Who would not leave the old.
Meek daisy of His fieid, thou art,
Marking their spirits' flight.
Down in history thou wilt bloom,
To keep their mem'ry bright.
