SHERIDAN GATE. One of the most used entrances
to Arlington Cemetery. The lintel surmounting the marble
pillars bears the single word "Sheridan", and on the columns
themselves are inscribed the names of Scott, Lincoln, Stanton
and Grant. The gate was built in 1879, the pillars having
been secured from the old War Office at Washington, a famous
government building erected in 1818.
