Its name originated from its call-note, described by Mr. Chapman as a petulant, whining sound. As a songster it is excelled by few birds, adding to its own striking powers of song a talent for mimicry ex- celled only by the Southern Mocking-bird. Its faultless execution and phrasing are only marred by its too evident consciousness. Although dressed so modestly, the Cat-bird is an obtrusive fellow, and quite friendly to mankind He and his mate, dressed in the same color, arrive in the Northern States during the last of April, making their nest, a bulky structure of leaves, bark and root- lets, usually in dense thickets a few feet from the ground.
