The greatest American Composer and Band Master, was born in 1854 at Washington, D. C.; at the age of eleven made his first public appearance as Violin Soloist, and after conducting for various opera companies, was appointed leader of band of United States Marine Corps in 1880; resigned from the United States service in 1892 and organized the now World's Famous Sousa's Band, which has appeared before the Crowned Heads of Europe and in almost every place in this country. His many composistions all struck the popular Chord. He is now familiarly known as the "March King." |
