York. Bootham. York is one of the walled cities.
Built in many different periods since Roman days, they are
mostly of the time of Edward III. To walk round the
walls gives some of the best views of the glorious Minster.
The city gates are called bars, and the streets leading to
them are gates. Bootham Bar, where the city is entered
from the north-west, is partly Norman. From here to
Monk's Bar the walls follow two sides of the Roman city,
Eboracum.
