ZEBRAS AND GNUS. This is an actual photograph
taken at a distance of about a mile with a telephoto
lens, by the official photographer with the Roosevelt
expedition. It shows the animals of the African up-
lands as they graze. The Athi plains are covered
with herds of giraffes, zebras, ostriches, gnus, buffaloes,
antelopes, wildebeestes. There are also golden and
and black jackels, wild dogs and other animals that
prey upon these. Many of these may be seen from the
windows of the trains on the Uganda railway.
