Maryland has its State Capitol in the city of Annapolis,
on the Severn River, one of the most historic spots in the
United States. Maryland has an area of 12,210 square
miles, and was one of the original thirteen colonies; its
State seal is reminiscent of the days of heraldry. Mary-
land was named in honour of Queen Henrietta Maria, wife
of Charles I., in his patent to Lord Baltimore in 1632.
