Massachusetts has its State Capitol in the historic city
of Boston, the "hub" and metropolis of New England.
Massachusetts is frequently referred to as the "Bay State"
or the "Old Colony State," from the fact that the first
colonists in New England settled on its shores. The State
has an area of 8,315 square miles, and was one of the
original thirteen colonies that formed the United States.
Massachusetts derived its name from a tribe of Indians who
lived in the vicinity.
