Galena-Home of Ulysses S. Grant. Ulysses S. Grant,
eighteenth President of the United States, was born at
Point Pleasant, Ohio, on April 27th, 1822. He was graduated
at West Point Military Academy in 1843, served through
the Mexican War (1846 48), and was commander of the
Union forces in the Civil War (1861-65). On Aug. 22d,
1848, he was married to Julia Dent. Before the outbreak
of the Civil War, their home was in Galena, Ill. Grant
died on July 23d, 1885, and his wife in 1902. They are
both buried in an imposing tomb erected in Riverside Park,
New York City, overlooking the Hudson.
