THE UNIVERSITY OF PENNSYLVANIA was
founded in 1740 by Benjamin Franklin as a chari-
table school. At the conclusion of the Revolution

a new charter was given by the State and
present title was assumed in 1791.
In 1875 the University was moved to the presenAUE27
