Additional Details:
Sterling was the name of the silver penny of the early English kings. In the course of time "sterling" became to be applied to silver which had the same degree of purity as the penny, and then by common usage to all things, and even people, having a standard high quality. Old English sterling silver is "sterling" in every sense. The fineness of the silver was set by law, and the quality of the workmanship by the high competitive standard of the silversmiths of Georgian England. Typical of the 18th Century sterling silver in our collection are the pieces pictured on this card
