Mammoth Steam Shovel at Work
BY UNDERWOOD & UNDERWOOD, N.Y.
143-2
Back:
May 20th marked an important epoch in the
history of the building of the Panama Canal,
when steam-shovels Nos. 230 and 222 seen in
the photograph, met opposite the town of
Culebra, working on the floor of the canal and
completed a channel at its bottom level the
entire length of Culebra Cut.
One of these shovels has a capacity of about
five cubic yards, and when the dipper is full of
mixed rock and earth it weighs about eight
tons, which is about five two-horse cart loads.
One of these shovels has taken out over 8000
tons of material in a day.
