Lower Gatun Lock, 7 miles from the Atlan-
tic entrance to the Canal. There are three
double locks at Gatun to allow the passage of
vessels in both directions. Each set of three
will lift a vessel 85 feet, from the Atlantic sea
level to the level of Gatun Lake. The locks are
about 1½ miles long, of solid concrete, and form
the largest concrete structure in the world.
About 2,000,000 yards of concrete will be used.
