Talolfgang Amadeus Mozart.
“T HE MASTER OF MASTERS.” Born at Salz-
burg, Germany, his father, a fine violinist, being
his teacher. “Wolferl ” showed passionate love for
music. At five he composed minuets; at six, concertos
for the harpsichord; at eleven a mass which he con-
ducted. With his father and “Nannerl,” his sister, he
made concert tours through Europe. In Italy he as-
tonished musicians by writing from memory a difficult
composition. At nineteen he brought out his first opera.
In 1782 he was married. He brought out his great tragic
opera “Don Giovanni," in 1787. All his life he had
to struggle with poverty. He taught, directed and com-
posed day and night, often writing until morning; he
always needed money. His unceasing work wore out
his frail body, and he died while still a very young man.
He was buried in Vienna, in a pauper's grave.
He was one of the greatest piano players of his
time, and was also a skillful player on the organ and
violin. He wrote three great operas, “Marriage of
Figaro,' “Magic Flute, “Don Giovanni;” his
works include symphonies, concertos, masses, string
quartets and many small pieces.
