GREENCASTLE PUBLIC SQUARE
A view of the north side of Square showing
First National Bank with Town Clock Tower
erected thereon in 1872. Town was laid out by
John Allison in 1782. The bird houses on the
poles around the Square house Greencastle's
famous Purple Martin Colony.
Over N. Carlisle Street, shown in photo, passed
upwards of 70,000 Confederate troops in 1863 on
their way to and from Gettysburg. Here, also,
Corporal William Rihl - the first Union soldier
killed on Union soil in the Civil War was shot.
