LINCOLN COUNTY COURT HOUSE
Carrizozo, New Mexico
The city is on the eastern side of the wide elevated
valley between the Carrizo and Sierra Blanca Moun-
tains on the East and bounded on the West by the
low Oscura Range. This valley is approximately 30
miles wide and is generally known as the Carrizozo
Plain. This is the county seat of Lincoln County and
the name is derived from the Spanish word CARRIZO
a reed grass that grows abundantly in surrounding
regions. The MALAPAIS (lava beds) lie just West of
the city on U. S. Highway 380.
