The Nicholas U. Mayall 4-meter (158-inch)
Telescope. The building stands 19 stores high
and measures 105 feet in diameter, and houses
the Nation's second largest optical telescope.
With a fused quartz mirror 158-inches in diam-
eter, the total weight of the telescope is 375
tons, yet it is so delicately balanced that a one-
half horsepower motor drives the tracking
mechanism.
