Bankhead Tunnel, named after a distinguished Alabama statesman, is the first engineering feat of its kind in the deep South. A four million dollar self-liquidating traffic artery under Mobile River, which reduces by seven and one half miles the distance between the city and points north and east on the Old Spanish Trail. Total length 3,389 feet, under river portion 1,147 feet, width of roadway 21 feet, headroom 13 feet 6 inches. Opened to traffic Feb. 20, 1941.
