The State Capitol of Maine is located in Augusta, one
of its principal cities. Maine, which is known as the
"Lumber State" and the "Pine Tree State," was admitted
to the Union in 1820. It has an area of 33,040 square
miles, and has as its floral emblem the pine cone. Maine
was so called as early as 1622, from the reference to it in
the charter as the "mayne land."
