Naturalist. Spent five years on H.M.S. "Beagle" in
exploration in the Southern Seas, 1831-6. His views
on natural selection were presented to the Linnæan
Society in 1858. In 1859 he published the "Origin of
Species' which marks a turning point in the history
of Western thought on evolutionary biology.
