STRAUSS (JOHANN)
(WAS BORN AND DIED AT VIENNA - 1825-1899)
Johann Strauss was a celebrated Austrian musician. When still
young, he showed a great talent for music and made pretty melo-
dies for dances, especially waltzes, the music of which was so
melodious and graceful, that he attracted much attention by it.
His waltz « An der schönen blauen Donau » became very popular
and is considered in Austria nearly as a national hymn. Having
become a celebrated man he was offered a post as director of the
Orchestra at the Court balls and Johann Strauss travelled about
with his musicians, visited the principal capitals of Europe and
was received at Paris with great enthusiasm. Later on he undertook
a tour all over America. He wrote for the theatre the operettes :
« Queen Indigo » and the « Gipsy » « Shrove Tuesday at Rome »
a comical opera and several other pieces all excelling in rhythm,
elegance of expression and beautiful melodies. Strauss has not had
his equal in this. Having got married with a young lady, a singer
at the opera, Jetty Treffz, he retired from his life as an artist
and lived quietly in the country from that time.
