largest suspension bridges in existence, and one of the
wonders of the world. It spans the East River, connecting
the boroughs of Manhattan and Brooklyn. The bridge
was designed by John A. Roebling, was begun January
2nd, 1870, and opened for traffic May 24th, 1883. Its con-
struction cost $15,000,000; subsequent improvements
increased this amount to $21,000,000. The towers are 278
feet above high-water, the channel span 1,595% feet, the
width 85 feet.
