A Primitive Hawaiian Home. Very few of the primi-
tive Hawaiian homes are still extant. They were but
grass huis, situated on the mountain side, amid pic-
turesque, tropical surroundings, and are now replaced by
frame cottages. The native has few wants beyond his
simple food and clothing, and may still be found engaged
in the ancient method of pounding or pulverizing grains
or seeds of some kind.
