The State Capitol of South Carolina is in Columbia,
one of the most up-to-date cities in the South. South
Carolina, known as the "Palmetto State," has an area of 30,570
square miles, and was one of the original thirteen colonies.
Its State flower is the golden rod. The name Carolina is
believed to have been given in compliment to a European
sovereign, but whether King Charles of England or King
Charles of France has never been definitely determined.
