1905 PIERCE GREAT
150
ARROW
Touring Car 4 cyl. 28-32 h.p. Price new: $4,250
The George N. Pierce Company built bicycles and bird cages, among other things,
before they entered the motor-vehicle market in 1901 with a Motorette patterned
after early French machines. From the start their cars were a success: the Motorette
distinguished itself especially in the 1901 Buffalo-to-New York endurance run of the
Automobile Club of America. There followed the Arrow car, and in 1904 the four-
cylinder Great Arrow. The company never entered its cars in speed contests but
continued to enter touring and endurance runs. The 1905 Glidden Tour, from New
York to the White Mountains and back, was won by Percy P. Pierce, son of the
founder, in an exact duplicate of the car shown here. During the 860-mile trek plus
a side trip up steep Mount Washington, the Great Arrow lost only four out of a
thousand points on penalties.
