The Sheriff, Fair Isle. Fair Isle is a halfway house
between the Orkneys and Shetlands, and the Sheriff is a
tapering peak of rock rising alone from the sea, near a
wild and rocky shore of stacks and skerries inhabited by
scarts and sea-gulls. One of the ships of the Spanish
Armada was wrecked here in 1588 with the loss of 100
lives, and from the survivors the islands are supposed to
have learned the art of knitting the light fleecy shawls for
which they are famous.
