Princetown, on the southern borders of Dart-
moor, is the highest place of any size in the
kingdom, being 1,370 feet above sea level. Near
here is the well-known prison, which was erected
in 1809 for the accommodaton of French prisoners,
and after lying useless for many years became
what it now is in 1850. The locality is pic-
turesque and repays exploration.
