A By-Canal. Here is seen a Japanese working his way
down a quiet by-canal, luminous in early sunlight, and in the
background is shown some quaint-looking houses, of which
the lattice work of new wood is highly decorative. The
Japanese workman is very poor y paid, but then his
necessities are few and simple, in many cases a daily meal
of rice, and a mat to sleep upon, meeting his requirements.
