Erected to the memory of Lt. Wm. T. Fitzsimons the first
American officer to lose his life in the World War. Lt. Fitz-
simons, a Kansas Citian, enlisted in the medical corps and was
killed in a field hospital bombardment in France, September
7,1917. The erection of the fountain was made possible through
popular subscriptions from the people of Kansas City.
