No. 5. POCAHONTAS SAVING THE LIFE OF
JOHN SMITH. While exploring in December, 1607,
Captain Smith was attacked by Indians; his companions
were killed, and he having sunk in the marsh, was dragged
out and tied to a tree to be used as a target for arrows
and tomahawks. A trifle saved him. He exhibited a
compass he always carried, the moving needle in which
the Indians could see, but could not touch on account of
the glass over it. This so amazed them he was released,
plentifully fed, and taken in triumphant procession be-
fore their King, Powhatan, who promptly ordered him
to be killed. As he lay bound upon the ground with the
clubs uplifted to beat out his brain, Pocahontas, then
between twelve and thirteen years of age, the favorite
and greatly beloved daughter of Powhatan, threw herself
upon John Smith, and at the risk of her own life en-
treated her father to spare him, which he did, saying:
"We will keep him to make hatchets and beads and toys
for the little SNOW FEATHER." (See Card No. 6.)
