Historical Long Island, Montauk Lighthouse

HISTORICAL LONG ISLAND, MONTAUK LIGHTHOUSE: George Washington signed the bill authorizing construc- tion in 1795. Copy of this bill is filed in the Town Clerk's Office in East Hampton. Surveys for the light- house site were begun in 1792. The tower was built in 1796. The original oil beacon for the Lighthouse was do- nated by the French Government.
