DETAILS, 18 IN EACH CASE A PURE DEMOCRACY. THE INHABITANTS ARE
CHIEFLY EMPLOYED IN AGRICULTURE AND CATTLE KEEPING, AND SPEAK A
PECULIAR DIALECT AND WEAR A CHARACTERISTIC COSTUME.

THOUGH THE CUSTOM OF WEARING DISTINCTIVE NATIVE COSTUMES 18
GRADUALLY DYING OUT IN SWITZERLAND, AND HAS PRACTICALLY COME INTO
DISUSE, IN ALL BUT TEN OF THE CANTONS (INCLUDING APPENZELL); AND
WHERE STILL IN USE, 18 PRINCIPALLY WORN ON SUNDAYS AND HOLIDAY8.
