TURKESTAN
THE COUNTRY OF THE TURKS, CALLED BY THE PERSIANS “TURAN," 18
AN EXTENSIVE REGION IN CENTRAL ASIA, STRETCHING FROM THE CASPIAN
SEA EASTWARD TO BEYOND LOB-NOR, AND FROM SIBERIA AND DZUNGARIA
SOUTHWARD TO PERSIA, AFGHANISTAN AND TIBET. THE CLIMATE
VARIES ON THE PLAINS FROM EXTREME COLD TO BURNING HEAT; IN THE
EASTERN HIGHLANDS, ALTHOUGH THE COLD IS ALMOST AS INTENSE IN
WINTER, THE HEAT OF SUMMER IS MUCH LESS.
TURKESTAN HAS PLAYED
AN IMPORTANT PART IN ASIATIC HISTORY FROM THE VERY EARLIEST
TIMES.
ORIGINALLY BEING HELD UNDER THE PERSIAN EMPIRE, IT WAS
SUCCESSIVELY CONTROLLED BY VARIOUS OF THE OLDEN BARBARIC TRIBES
UNTIL AFTER PASSING THROUGH A LONG SERIES OF WARS BETWEEN THE
TURKOMANS AND THE PEOPLES OF THE ADJOINING COUNTRIES, TUR-
KESTAN (EXCEPT THAT PORTION KNOWN AS CHINESE TURKESTAN,
AND NOW UNDER CONTROL OF THE CHINESE EMPIRE), HAS, BY RUSSIAN
ENCROACHMENT, PASSED INTO THE CONTROL OF THE RUSSIAN EMPIRE.
THE INHABITANTS ARE COMPOSED OF UZBEGS, WHO ARE THE DOMINANT
RACE, TURKOMANS, KARAKULPAKS, KIRGHIZ, SARTS, TAJIKS, PERSIANS,
KIPTCHAKS, AND A FEW ARABS, HINDOO8 AND JEWS. OUR PICTURE
REPRESENTS TWO WOMEN OF THE KIRGHIZ RACE, WHO ARE A PEOPLE OF
NOMADIC HABITS AND DEVOTE THEIR TIME ALMOST EXCLUSIVELY TO CATTLE
BREEDING.
