AND SOUTH BY THE PERCHE, MAINE AND BRITTANY, THE UPPER SARTHE
AND THE LOWER COUESNON FORMING A PART OF THE DIVIDING LINE. IT
18 MOST LEVEL AND FERTILE, AND PRODUCES GRAIN, FLAX AND FRUIT,
AND AN EXCELLENT BREED OF HORSES.
ROUEN WAS THE CAPITAL OF
THE PROVINCE AND THE CHIEF TOWN OF THE DIVISION OF UPPER NOR-
MANDY, AND CAEN WAS THE CHIEF TOWN OF LOWER NORMANDY.
EARLY GALLIC INHABITANTS WERE SUBDUED BY THE ROMANS WHO IN-
CLUDED IT IN THE PROVINCE OF GALLIA LUGDUNENSIS SECUNDA. UNDER
THE MEROVINGIAN KINGS, IT WAS INCLUDED WITHIN THE LIMITS OF
NEUSTRIA, AND RECEIVED THE NAME OF NORMANDY FROM THE NORTH-
MEN WHO OCCUPIED IT IN THE BEGINNING OF THE 10TH CENTURY. IN
912, CHARLES THE SIMPLE GAVE HIS SANCTION TO THE CONQUESTS MADE
BY THE NORTHMEN, AND ROLLO, THEIR CHIEF, RECEIVED THE TITLE OF
