BULGARIA
OTHERWISE KNOWN AS THE "VILAYET TUNA" OR PROVINCE OF THE
DANUBE, WAS FORMERLY A POLITICAL DIVISION OF EUROPEAN TURKEY;
BUT IS NOW AN INDEPENDENT PRINCIPALITY.
IT STRETCHES ALONG THE
RIGHT BANK OF THE DANUBE FROM THE INFLUX OF THE TIMOK TO ITS
MOUTH, AND IS BOUNDED ON THE SOUTH BY THE MAIN CHAIN OF THE
BALKANS, WHICH SEPARATE IT FROM RUMELIA; ON THE EAST BY THE
BLACK SEA, AND ON THE WEST BY SERVIA. IT MAY BE ROUGHLY DESCRIBED
AS A GREAT TABLE-LAND, WITH SOIL FOR THE MOST PART SO FERTILE
THAT AGRICULTURE IS THE PRINCIPAL INDUSTRY.
ITS CLIMATE MAY BE
CALLED TEMPERATE.
THE BULGARIANS WERE ORIGINALLY A PEOPLE OF
UGRIAN OR FINNISH EXTRACTION AND FIRST APPEAR IN HISTORY ABOUT
THE YEAR 120 B. O.
THE PRESENT INHABITANTS ARE A MIXTURE OF
FINNISH, RUSSIAN, TURKISH AND TARTAR BLOOD AND BUT LITTLE TRACE
OF THEIR FINNISH ORIGIN NOW REMAINS. THEIR LANGUAGE, ALTHOUGH
STILL FUNDAMENTALLY SLAVONIC, AND USUALLY PLACED BETWEEN THE
RUSSIAN AND SERVIAN, IS YET LARGELY MINGLED WITH TURKISH AND
PERSIAN, AND
HAS EVEN A CONSIDERABLE ELEMENT OF ITALIAN AND
GREEK.
