The Union Pacific Railroad (Overland Route)
is a natural thoroughfare, originally followed by
herds of buffalo, by the Indians, fur traders, ex-
plorers, Mormons, goldseekers, the Overland stage
coach and the Pony Express. It remains the short-
est route across the continent, and a boulevard
of steel upon an embankment surfaced with gran-
ite has supplanted the highway of the pioneers.
Grades have been reduced, curves have been
straightened, heavier rails have been laid. Smooth-
riding, all-steel trains of the finest, most luxurious
type speed daily across the continent on double
tracks protected by automatic electric block signals.
Thirteen great national parks and all of the
principal resort regions of the West are reached
by the Union Pacific System and its connections.
