Taos of the old Frontier. The Spanish explorers came here in 1540. American traders and trappers made this village their headquarters as early as 1806. Scene of important battles during the Mexican war of 1846-47. Taos valley was the granary of he far west from 1700 until 1875. Nestled high in the Sangre de Cristo mountains this Shangri-La of ancient culture has an atmosphere of bygone centuries. Here in pioneer days much of the colorful history of the southwest was made - and here age old Indian and Spanish customs still prevail. The home of Kit Carson, famous here of the Old West, is just a few doors off the Plaza.
