USNS General Simon B. Buckner, first of the P-2 troop transports, was built in Alameda, Calif., in 1944-45. She is 609 feet long, 76 feet wide, can cruise at 20 knots and has two turbo-electric engines, each of which generates 10,000 horse-power. Complete facilities for troop recreation are available on board. Equipped with modern safety and life-caving gear, the ship is part of the fleet of military transports and cargo vessels operated by the Military Sea Transport Service, Department of the Navy
