South Dakota has its State Capitol in the city of Pierre.
The area of the State (which was admitted to the Union in
1889) is 77,650 square miles, and its floral emblem is the
anemone. The word Dakota is of Indian derivation and
was first applied to the Territory of Dakota, which was
later divided into the States of North and South Dakota.
